“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40 and see also Mark 12:28-31 and Luke 10:25-28)
Why does Jesus link these two commandments?
How does your relationship with God affect your relationship with others? How does your relationship with others affect your relationship with God?
Journal about one person whom God has used to show you God’s love in practical ways. Consider reaching out to that person to thank them and to share specifically how you experienced God’s love through them. If you cannot reach them, tell someone the story of this person and the role the person played in your spiritual life.
Lord, I confess that I have often failed to express my love for you by loving others well. And I have also failed to see that the way I love others can help me better understand how you love me. As John says, “…if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?” (1 John 4:20). Fill me anew with love for you and those you’ve put in my life, so they may experience your love through me. In the strong name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
